Drainage of breast abscess

Preparation:
It may be possible to aspirate a breast abscess without a general anaesthetic in which case no specific preparation is required. However if an abscess has recurred or is a complex abscess a general anaesthetic will be needed and preparation will be as below.

Procedure:
The initial treatment of many breast abscess will be aspiration of the pus and thereafter treatment with antibiotics. For more complex abscesses or those that have failed to settle after aspiration an incision is placed over the area of maximum swelling and the pus removed. A biopsy of the abscess may also be required.

Anaesthetic:
General anaesthetic if requiring open incision

Post Op:
Wound dressings may be required on a regular basis. Many breast abscesses are related to breast feeding and it may be that milk needs to be expressed to prevent breast engorgement.

Antibiotics if there is surrounding infection
