Drainage of perianal or ischiorectal abscess

Preparation:
As for general anaesthetic

Procedure:
An incision is placed over the area of maximum swelling. In addition an examination will be performed to determine if there is a connection between the abscess and the anal canal, however it is not always possible to identify such a connection when there is a lot of swelling and inflammation and if there is any doubt a further examination may be required at later date.

Anaesthetic:
General anaesthetic

Post Op:
Wound dressings will be required on a regular basis
Antibiotics if there is surrounding infection.
If the wound continues to discharge after surgery it is likely that there is an underlying fistula-in-ano. In this case further examination or investigation may be required.
