Drainage of pilonidal abscess
Preparation:
As for general anaesthesia.
Procedure:
If there are acute symptoms of pain, swelling and/or discharge it is likely that the sinus is infected and there is an abscess. In this case the skin overlying the swelling will be incised and the underlying pus drained. The skin will probably require to be left open and the wound dressed.
Anaesthetic:
General anaesthetic.
Post Op:
If the wound is left open you will require regular dressings until it shows signs of healing satisfactorily.
Even after healing it is important to keep the area around a pilonidal sinus hair free to reduce the risk of recurrence.
