Endoanal excision of polyp

Preparation:
As for general anaesthetic in addition patients may be given a suppository or an enema to clear the lower bowel prior to the procedure.

Procedure:

If a polyp is within 10cm of the anus it is often possible to remove this from within the anus.  This involves prolapsing the polyp out of the anal canal and excision of it – suturing the breach in the lining of the bowel wall.  For polyps on a stalk this may be a relatively simple procedure but for those that have a wide base this may be complex and have to be undertaken as a staged procedure i.e. partial excision followed by a further excision.

Anaesthetic:
General or spinal

Post Op:
For larger polyps it is usual to keep patients in hospital over-night in case of any bleeding.  Depending upon the pathology of the polyp it may be important to perform regular review to ensure there is no recurrence of the polyp and that there are no polyps elsewhere in the bowel.
