Incisional
Pre-Operative preparation:
Standard general anaesthetic preparation.
Operation:
Depending upon the size of the defect in the previous scar the options will be either insertion of a nylon mesh or direct suture. A mesh can be placed either laparoscopically or through an open incision.
Anaesthesia:
Most incisional herniae will require a general anaesthetic.
Post Operative Care:
In Patient care. Large incisional herniae may require a few days recovery in hospital if a drain is in place or if painful. The timing of return to work and to full activity will be dependant upon the size of the hernia following an open procedure. The main advantage to the laparoscopic approach is an earlier recovery period but again this will generally relate to the size of the hernia. Generally there will not be any sutures to remove but there may be steri-strips (or paper strips) covering the wound.
