Stomal and Parastomal Herniae

Pre-Operative preparation:
Standard general anaesthetic preparation.

Operation:
Depending upon the size of the defect in the previous scar the options will be either insertion of a nylon mesh or direct suture. A mesh can be placed either laparoscopically or through an open incision. For more complex parastomal herniae it may be necessary to resite the stoma

Anaesthesia:
General anaesthetic.

Post Operative Care:
In Patient care. Large herniae may require a few days recovery in hospital if a drain is in place or if painful. The timing of return to work and to full activity will be dependant upon the size of the hernia and the complexity of the surgery. In most patients, there will be some alteration in the functioning of the stoma for 2-3 days post operatively. In addition it is likely that the wound around the stoma will alter its shape and the stoma therapist may need to be involved with advice regarding appliances. Generally there will not be any sutures to remove but there may be steri-strips (or paper strips) covering the wound.
