Therapeutic Colonoscopy with snaring of mucosal lesion

Preparation:
Patients will require to take a strong laxative on the day prior to the examination. This is administered in two separate doses approximately 8 hours apart. During the period of preparation no solids should be consumed but patients are encouraged to drink.

Procedure:
A fibre optic endoscope is passed into the rectum and around the whole length of the large bowel. Mucosal lesions are encircled with a snare and removed using high frequency diathermy.

Sedation:
The procedure is generally performed after the administration of an intravenous sedative and analgesic

Post Op:
Sedation will require several hours to wear off and patients should not drive or use heavy machinery for 24 hours.

Because air is used to distend the bowel during the examination it is not uncommon to feel bloated for a few hours after a colonoscopy
