Umbilical or Periumbilical Herniae
Pre-Operative preparation:
Standard preparation for general anaesthesia
Operation:
Depending upon the size of the defect in the previous scar the options will be either insertion of a nylon mesh or direct suture. A mesh can be placed either laparoscopically or through an open incision.
Anaesthesia:
Smaller herniae may be repaired under local anaesthetic others (and certainly laparoscopic procedures) will require a general anaesthetic.
Post Op:
Day case or with an overnight stay. Pain killers are likely to be required for several days after the operation. In most cases patients will be mobile from an early stage and can expect to be fully recovered after 2-3 weeks
