Wedge Excision Nail

Preparation:
A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the base of the toe on admission to hospital to numb the skin

Procedure:

A wedge section of nail, involving the edge that is ingrowing is removed. The nail bed can be cauterised with phenol solution or excised.

Anaesthetic:
Local anaesthetic

Post Op:
A large padded dressing is applied in theatre which will make wearing shoes difficult. The initial dressing can be reduced to a more manageable dressing in 48hrs.

When sitting it is important that you elevate the foot that has been operated on with a stool or chair.
